Australia left India for South Africa in late December 1969 with the belief they could conquer other continents.
It was a bridge too far. They arrived cocksure and couldn’t muster a reasonable batting line-up. Future captain Ian Chappell, batting at number three, was unable to occupy the crease for more than an hour at a time and couldn’t score anything resembling a decent outing.

By 1973 Australia had created a new narrative which saw them at the top.
